Timed tests and diplomas

A timed test is a test against the clock. A diploma is a real challenge, with your child’s name on it when they pass.

Taking a timed test

  1. On the home screen, tap Test.
  2. Under Choose a timed test, pick a test from the list. Or choose Choose your own to pick the tables yourself.
  3. After the countdown, the clock starts.

There are two kinds of clock: a few seconds per sum, or one time for the whole test. Which tests there are depends on the country where your child goes to school. For the United Kingdom there are three:

TestSumsTime
MTC practice256 seconds per sum
Quick-fire test106 seconds per sum
Full check508 seconds per sum

MTC practice and the Quick-fire test cover the tables 2 to 12, with a 3-second pause after each answer, just like the real Multiplication Tables Check. Full check covers the tables 1 to 12. Other countries have their own tests, with their own names.

Afterwards you’ll see how many sums were right, how it went By table, and which sums were missed.

How often

On the free plan, your child can take one timed test per week. Once it’s done, the app says when the next one is available. Learning and practice carry on as normal in the meantime, as often as your child likes. With Pro, timed tests are unlimited.

Earning a diploma

  1. On the home screen, tap Diploma.
  2. Pick a diploma under Choose a diploma. Each diploma shows how many sums it has, which tables are in it and what’s needed to pass.
  3. Do the sums.

What your child needs for a diploma depends on the diploma; it’s shown when you pick one. In the United Kingdom your child earns it with at least 90% right, and no more than 6 seconds per sum on average. There, that’s the Times Tables Certificate: 50 sums from the tables 1 to 12. In the Netherlands there are two, the Klein diploma (the tables 1 to 5 and 10) and the Groot diploma (the tables 1 to 10). Other countries have their own diplomas, with their own names.

Passed, or not yet

If they pass, it says Diploma! with your child’s name, the tables, the score and the date. That diploma is theirs to keep. It never goes away, not even when a subscription ends.

If it doesn’t work out yet, it says Not yet. The app shows which sums already went well and which tables didn’t go so well yet, with a button to practise that table. There’s no penalty and nothing is taken away. Your child can try again whenever they like.

Sharing a diploma

Below an earned diploma it says For a grown-up. Behind that is a button you press and hold for three seconds. Then tap Share diploma, and you’ll get an image of the diploma with your child’s name on it. Where it goes is up to you: to the grandparents, or to yourself to keep.

How many diplomas are free

On the free plan, your child can earn the first diploma. With Pro, every diploma for your country can be earned, plus a diploma for the test at school.
